I’ve heard it said that if you are the same person at 40 that you were at 20 you have wasted the last 20 years. I think there’s a lot of truth to that. Change is a natural part of life. The key is to make it positive change and not just change for the sake of change.
So how do you do that?
Well, 3 things make up the foundation of positive change. Those 3 things are your knowledge, your skill, and your approach.
First, let’s talk about knowledge. If you don’t know what you are doing, you can’t possibly be very effective. That’s pretty straightforward.
I used to play basketball when I was younger, so let’s use that as an example. If you want to be a good basketball player, it all starts with understanding the rules of the game.
Have you ever watched someone try to play basketball (or any sport) when they don’t know what they are doing? It’s painful to watch and they suck…BIG TIME! Even if they were the most gifted athlete in the world, if they don’t know the rules of the game, they aren’t ever going to excel. It’s impossible.
Second, let’s talk about skill. Skills are developed with time and repetition. The more you do something, the more opportunity you have to improve your skills.
Back to our basketball analogy…you become a better shooter by shooting. You become a better dribbler by dribbling. Practice makes perfect.
The important thing is that you have a method to your madness. If you lack knowledge but try to make up for it with effort, you will just be practicing bad habits. You need to have BOTH knowledge and skills.
Third, let’s talk about approach. How you go about doing things matter. Your approach can either enhance your results or undermine them.
In the basketball world, some players have a lot of basketball knowledge and skill, but they lack that competitive drive. They lack a killer instinct when it comes to playing, and as a result, they never fully maximize their talents. Their approach is all wrong.
When it comes to building a successful chiropractic practice, all 3 of these foundational pieces are important.
You can’t expect to be an excellent business owner when you don’t know anything about business. You can’t expect to improve your marketing skills if you don’t ever put them into practice. And you can’t expect to build trust in your community if your approach is untrustworthy.
If you want to grow. If you want things to change. You have to work on all 3 areas. Improve your knowledge. Develop your skills. Finetune your approach. That’s how positive change happens.
