When I was a freshman in college, I started getting headaches. I’m talking about REALLY bad headaches! I remember trying a lot of things to get rid of them but nothing seemed to help. My best option was often to lock myself in a dark room with the hopes that I could sleep it off.
My mom suggested that I go to the chiropractor. I was 100% against it, but I don’t really remember why. I hadn’t ever gone to a chiropractor before. I don’t remember ever hearing anything bad. I was just convinced that they “weren’t real doctors,” so I wasn’t going to go.
Obviously, that’s not the end of my story. I reluctantly went to the chiropractor after I had exhausted all other options. It turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life. Not only did chiropractic help me eliminate my headaches, but I ended up becoming a chiropractor as well. Pretty crazy.
Over the years, I have been fascinated with what people think about chiropractic. Turns out, my past biases against chiropractic aren’t all that uncommon. I have heard people say the strangest things about why they don’t like chiropractors. A lot of it doesn’t even make sense, but that doesn’t stop people from thinking it.
For the most part, biases against chiropractic are just a big misunderstanding. It starts with the fact that people are very uneducated about the health benefits that come from a healthy spine. This may surprise you, but the idea that a healthy spine equals a healthy person isn’t even originally a chiropractic concept. Thousands of years before chiropractic was ever a profession, people were talking about the importance of a healthy spine. Even Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, was credited with saying, “Look well to the spine for the cause of disease.”
Unfortunately, over the years chiropractors haven’t exactly helped themselves out. We have a rich history of snake-oil salesman in our ranks, and some of them are still in practice today. There are chiropractors who tell people they won’t EVER get sick or won’t EVER need medication as long as they are getting regular chiropractic adjustments. Some chiropractors act like the human body can turn a cheeseburger into a stalk of broccoli as long as the person is getting their spine adjusted. That’s just crazy talk. Don’t listen to those people.
Chiropractic care is amazing. It has literally changed my life, and I know I’m not alone. Countless people have experienced the benefits of chiropractic care, but in the interest of fairness, that doesn’t mean there isn’t ever a good reason NOT to visit a chiropractor.
In fact, one of my chiropractor friends wrote an article several years ago outlining 8 reasons NOT to visit a chiropractor. I will warn you…these are a bit tongue-in-cheek, but I wanted to share them with you anyway. I don’t think you will mind. Enjoy!
